The job search can be stressful, but so can the offer.
Job seeking can cause anxiety and frustration, particularly if you start receiving generic rejections to tailored applications…and PANIC can set in. This is the point when people are at risk of making a knee-jerk decision and perhaps accepting the first role that comes along due to desperation, financial necessity or lack of confidence.
I recently spoke to a Senior HR Business Partner who had been made redundant – she accepted the first role she was offered and pulled out of two other recruitment processes that were approaching final stage. After starting her new role, upon reflection, she realised she had made a rash decision. The new company and role were not in line with her objectives and she didn’t fit culturally. She’d accepted the position without careful consideration. By this point, it was too late to re-enter the recruitment processes she had withdrawn from, and she was forced to start her search from scratch.
So how should you make a decision on possible new roles? How do you know if you’re making the right decision at the right time? This is a question to ask your recruitment consultant.
In my experience, there are two things to consider when deciding whether or not to accept a role. The first is the interview process – who have you met in the company? Have you seen the offices? Have you been briefed properly and have you felt valued throughout the process?
The second is good old-fashioned gut instinct – nobody knows you better than you, and nobody knows what is best for you career-wise. By all means, speak to recruitment consultants about the marketplace, discuss with loved ones what your options are, but at the end of the day make a decision that feels right…….whether that’s the first role or the fifth.
Good things come to those who wait. The first and easiest option is not always the best. While it may be hard, it’s important to keep a clear head when making decisions and stand your ground if necessary.
